The Galveston Children's Museum's Easiest Weeks at Moody Gardens Come Before the Lights Go Up

October 29, 2026

For 12 years, the Galveston Children's Museum filled the first floor of Moody Mansion at 2618 Broadway. Over that time it grew into a nonprofit serving 40,000 to 45,000 people a year through visits and outreach, and it ran out of room. The space got so tight that a kazoo concert had to move outdoors, according to The Daily News. Its new home is the second floor of the Discovery Pyramid at Moody Gardens, 1 Hope Blvd., where the museum has a two-year residency.

Public reopening was set for Nov. 1, with members getting in a day or two earlier. On the island calendar, that date sits right before Moody Gardens' busiest season. Holiday in the Gardens opens Nov. 21 and runs through Jan. 2, 2027. From Nov. 1 through Nov. 20, families can visit on ordinary daytime hours with ordinary parking. From Nov. 21 on, the museum shares its building with the island's largest holiday attraction.

What the Move Actually Changed

According to The Daily News, the Discovery Pyramid space lets the museum host school field trips while staying open to the public, which it has never been able to do before. Executive Director Zahrah Ektefaei wants exhibits that draw on different parts of the island. She told The Daily News:

"We're making a causeway that kids can actually walk onto."

The plans in that report include a walk-on causeway with a rail and divot where kids can roll toy cars, an exhibit featuring local restaurants, and a play structure shaped like a sandcastle. These are described as planned features, so your first visit may show some of them still in progress. The museum's own site says its exhibits are designed for children from birth to age 10, and its Room to Grow area is built for ages 2 to 5. Most families stay about an hour and a half to two hours.

The schedule changed too. The museum's posted hours for its Moody Gardens reopening run seven days a week. GCM members get 9 to 10 a.m. to themselves, and general admission runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. That daily schedule is what makes the next two weeks the easy ones.

Two Seasons Under One Pyramid

The museum's FAQ says general admission stretches to 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. during "select events and seasonal periods, including Holiday in the Gardens and Summer Break." The museum move FAQ adds that parking procedures change after 4 p.m. during Holiday in the Gardens, and that updated arrival details will go out to GCM families during the season. Moody Gardens says the Holiday Lights Trail opens at dusk, around 6 p.m.

Taken together, those dates split the fall in two:

Nov. 5 to Nov. 20 Nov. 21 to Jan. 2, 2027
General admission hours 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Extended to 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
GCM member hour 9 to 10 a.m. 9 to 10 a.m.
Parking Behind the Discovery Pyramid, sidewalk to the museum Procedures change after 4 p.m.
Next door Regular Moody Gardens day Holiday in the Gardens, lights trail at dusk
Closures None listed Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Day

The holiday stretch isn't a bad time to go. Those later hours let a family fit the museum in after school, or pair it with the lights. It just has more moving parts. Before Nov. 21, a visit is a daytime trip with one rule to remember about where to park. After Nov. 21, an afternoon arrival means checking the latest parking directions first. Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, is a closure, and so are Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

Parking and Getting In

The museum tells visitors to park behind the Discovery Pyramid and follow the sidewalk to the entrance. Moody Gardens' visitor FAQ lists standard self-parking as free. Premium covered self-parking costs $30, valet is $40, and temporary day parking is $15. Moody Gardens also says parking stays free throughout Holiday in the Gardens. The after-4 p.m. changes the museum mentions are about the arrival routine, not price, and the museum says it will share those details with families as the season starts.

You don't need a Moody Gardens attraction ticket to visit. The museum sells its own admission, and the move FAQ states plainly that GCM "can still be your destination." Tickets are sold at the door with no reservation needed for a general visit. The museum also notes that buying directly from it sends 100% of proceeds to the museum.

What a Visit Costs, and When a Membership Pays Off

Here are the museum's prices at the new location:

  • General admission, ages 2 and up: $15
  • Children under 2: free
  • Seniors 65+ and active military: $12
  • Everybody Plays: $5 per person for up to five guests

Here's the baseline that matters for a local family. Two adults and two children over 2 pay $60 for a single visit. The Family of 4 membership is $125 a year, so it pays for itself partway through the third visit. The Family Passport covers up to five named people for $165 a year, and the Individual tier is $35. Membership also comes with the 9 to 10 a.m. hour before the doors open to everyone else. For a family of five, five general admissions come to $75, so the Passport costs a little more than two visits.

Some households may already be covered. A Moody Gardens SuperSaver Pass includes museum admission. Moody Gardens members get in free "during regular operating hours," though that doesn't include GCM-specific perks like camp, program and event discounts. In the other direction, a GCM membership covers the museum only, not the rest of Moody Gardens.

A First-Visit Plan for the Quiet Window

  1. Check galvestoncm.org or the museum's Facebook page the morning you go. The move FAQ still says details like maps and directions will be shared closer to opening, so the latest post is the one to trust.
  2. Go on a weekday between Nov. 5 and Nov. 20, any time from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., or come at 9 a.m. if you're a member.
  3. Park behind the Discovery Pyramid in standard self-parking and walk the sidewalk in.
  4. Give it about two hours, which is the museum's own estimate for most families.
  5. Save Tuesday, Nov. 17 if you'd like to be there for the larger ribbon-cutting ceremony The Daily News reported.

Why the Residency Has an End Date

The Moody Gardens arrangement lasts two years. Moody Mansion has already made other plans for the old space, so the museum can't go back there. Ektefaei told The Daily News that her goal is the old Sears building at 2222 Broadway. The more than 45,800-square-foot building opened in 1940 as an "ultra-modern" Sears superstore, according to the Galveston Historical Foundation. She pictures a permanent home for kids of all ages there, including programs for middle schoolers, who tend to age out of children's museums.

The museum spends about $500,000 a year with roughly 10 staff members, and Ektefaei said she expects to hire two or three more to cover Moody Gardens' extended holiday hours. The museum's own FAQ says that when you buy admission from the museum directly, all of the proceeds go to the museum.

A museum's new address is the kind of change that shapes how a family uses the island day to day.
